DESIGNER/ARTIST/COMPANY/COUNTRY:
NAPCO (National Potteries Corporation):
The Company was founded in Bedford, Ohio, in 1938 by Irwin Garber, Payner, and David Rein. (Garber eventually left to start his own company, Inarco in the 1960s.) Prior to WWII, Napco was mainly a producer of decorative floral containers, but after the war it grew rapidly by importing collectible ceramic novelty items from Japan’s ceramics manufacturing centers of Nagoya and Seto. From these factories came those famous lady head vases, figurines, wall pockets, and other decorative items. The figurines in particular struck a chord with Americans, who were developing a serious sweet tooth for the cutsey kitsch style. The business has held the interest of collectors because the ceramic items were consistently well-designed and visually pleasing and some of Napco’s pieces command high prices in today’s market. They, along with Lefton, have given us some of our favorite knick knacks, kitschkies, and collectibles.
DETAILS:
~ 1956 Ceramic Head Vase
~ This elegant, stylish Lady has her eyes closed as her puckered, red lips blow a kiss from beneath her karat gold trimmed feather hat. She is donned with karat gold earrings, a “diamond” bracelet with five, sparkly glass rhinestones, and a black dress. Her cheeks are rosy with rouge and her nails are immaculately painted red.
~ Stamps: C1840 (design #), Napco, 1956
~ There are several versions (different design #s), but our girl is more elaborate than most and the low design # indicates an early version. Truly, a Fabulous Find that will only increase in value!

CONDITION:
Excellent
Vintage condition
! Beautiful with vibrant colors and all are intact! She is very clean overall as she’s been enclosed in a cabinet for many decades. I detect no chips or breaks. There is crazing, but that’s to be expected on ceramic pieces this old and I’ve yet to see one without it. I hope I look this good at 65!
