"Civil War era women and teen girls wore belts over their bodices and skirts to help emphasize the waistline. Belts also helped to hide the join between the bodice and skirt. Most of the belts were made for show and were meant to be seen. Ladies made belts out of many different fabrics. The were made from: silks, satin, velvet, brocades and tapestry fabrics as well as cottons, linens and wool. Often the belt was used as a showpiece of the ladies handiwork. Women would spend hours working up intricate designs in needlework, bead-work or braid work."
